What do I need to know about choosing my Master Password?
Your Master Password is the password that you are prompted to create when you initially sign up for your LastPass account.
Whenever you log in to LastPass, you need your email address and Master Password to access your account. It is important that you create a very strong Master Password that you will not forget.
Don’t share your master password with anyone, ever!
It needs to be long and unique to protect you from brute-force attacks and to ensure that a breach at another website won’t affect your LastPass account.
Ensure that your master password has the following characteristics:
- Use a minimum of 12 characters, but the lengthier the better
- Use upper case, lower case, numeric, and special character values
- Make it memorable, but not easily guessed
- Make sure that it is unique only to you
- Never use personal information
We also recommend that you set up a password hint as this can be helpful if you ever forget your Master Password.
Never re-use your LastPass Master Password for any other account or application; this password is intended only for your LastPass account and if you re-use it you will actually be less secure than if you hadn’t used LastPass in the first place!
LastPass does provide recovery options if you forget your password, but they can’t ever send, reset, or look up your password for you if you no longer remember it.
